UMass Boston
Summer 2015

Course Description:
  • Math 240 (3 credits): Differential and integral calculus of functions of several variables and of vector fields. Topics include Euclidean, polar, cylindrical, and spherical coordinates; dot product, cross-product, equations of lines and planes; continuity, partial derivatives, curves, directional derivatives, gradient; optimization in several variables; multiple integrals, iterated integrals, change of coordinates, Jacobians, general substitution rule.
  • Math 242R (1 credit): Surfaces, parametrizations, line integrals, surface integrals; circulation, flux, divergence; conservative, solenoidal vector fields; scalar, vector potential; Green, Gauss, and Stokes theorems.
  • Math 242 (4 credits): All topics covered in Math 240 and Math 242R.
Which version should you take:
  • Mathematics and Engineering majors: Math 242 is required.
  • Physics majors: Both Math 240 and Math 242 are accepted, but Math 242 is recommended.
  • Math minor: Both Math 240 and Math 242 are accepted.
  • Students who already have credit for Math 240 should enroll in Math 242R (1 credit).
Syllabus: [PDF file]
Schedule:
  • MTuWTh 10:00am - 11:45am in W-02-198.
  • Classes meet at the same time as a combined section.
  • Students enrolled in Math 240 are responsible only for roughly the first 3/4 of the material (see the course descriptions above).
  • Students enrolled in Math 242R are responsible only for roughly the last 1/4 of the material (see the course descriptions above), but are advised to review the material covered by Math 240 before starting Math 242R.
